Leather Bindings

Temple Bookbinders offers a traditional hand binding service, using natural calf or goat skin leather creating books with traditional laced-in boards on a hollow-back (not cased bindings).

In quarter, half or full leather bindings all books are hand finished i.e. gold leaf tooling and lettering with hand tools. To reflect the traditional style or the client's design or instructions; a selection of leathers, gold tooling and styles e.g. raised bands to the spine with gold centres or devices, can embellish a leather binding.

Book block edges can be gilded on request. Unique, individually commissioned personal bindings can therefore be created.

In addition to the production of new bindings, we have developed a service for repair and refurbishment of old bindings. Those bindings which have protected books for hundreds of years are sympathetically and skillfully restored. Only the finest materials are used when constructing a new binding and regeneration an old one.
